The Mind

I had a revelation some time ago. We sin first in the mind. This may not seem like a big deal to some of you who understood that already, but that means that our mind is the first place of attack. We must be prepared in our mind at all times. When sin enters our minds, we can do one of two things: kick it our or think on it. If you kick it out, you move on and are fine. If you think on it, your thoughts become plans and ideas that fester in your heart, and out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Luke 6:45) and what we speak we begin to act upon. By letting sin take control in our mind, we allow it to take control in our hearts and in our actions. It is so simple and quick that we must always be on guard. "Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flows the spring of life." (Proverbs 4:23)

How do we stop this? Most of us have been living deep in sin and have been used to allowing those thoughts in. Before Christ, there was no point in not meditating on sin. What else was there to do? We didn't have a reason not to sin. Our first step in renewing our minds to think like Christ and not like the world. Romans 12:2 says, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." By letting God renew our minds, we gain a new way of thinking. We gain the ability to think of good things; but just because we have the ability to do good does not mean that we loose the ability to do bad. We still have free will. We must choose a side and stay on it. James 1:8 tells us that a double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Once we accept Jesus Christ into our lives, we have the ability to think good thought and abstain from sin. With the blood of Jesus comes the power to say no to sin. We must submit ourselves to God. Resist the Devil and he will flee from us (James 4:7). We must remember that Christ was the victory and when we live in Him we die to the world. We no longer live in sin, but we live in Christ. We have control, so we must now use it. 1 Corinthians 10:5 tells us to take every thought captive to obey Christ.

Your mind is a battle field, and you must stay in control. Christ is there to keep out any sin, but you must choose to let Him work. "Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, least we drift away from it." (Hebrews 2:1) It may seem hard at first, but remember that prayer helps with everything. Through prayer, God can give you the strength to overcome. Now, instead of loosing our minds to sinful thoughts, let us change our thinking. "Finally, brother, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." (Philippians 4:8)
